Recruiting Referral Extremes: Money Talks!

Recruiting Referral Extremes: Money Talks!

The IT and Gaming industries are spending big bucks when it comes to recruiting the perfect employee.  Within the last several months, we’ve seen a few innovative companies making jaw-dropping announcements to entice the right people to work for them.  Finding the right candidate for any job can be a challenge, but some firms are thinking way outside the box and reaching for their checkbooks.

moneytalk1Two such companies made recent announcements about recruiting and finding the right employees for their businesses.  ThoughtSpot, a data search solution startup, and a successful gaming company, Riot Games.

ThoughtSpot, a Redwood City enterprise startup, offers a data search appliance (a plug-and-play solution) that provides a search-based user experience for business data access and analysis.  The company has had some serious cash incentives for employee referrals.  So much that last month they announced a special offer of $20K for employee referrals.   In this industry, experts say the range of typical referrals is $3,000-to-$5,000.  That’s quite a leap in referral money isn’t it?

Riot Games, is equally determined to find the perfect candidate for their business.  This company is the producer of the popular PC game “League of Legends.”  On a blog post last month, the company announced a program called “Queue Dodge” where Riot Games will pay employees up to $25,000 to quit if they are not a good fit.  From their blog post, they stated,

“We want to make sure that [people] are here for more than just a paycheck. We want people that believe in our long term vision and want to be a part of our culture.”

In a highly competitive space as gaming and information technology, it’s no wonder companies are using these type of tactics.  Will it last or more importantly will it move on to other industries?  It depends how competitive the job market is for an industry.  For the IT industry though, I suspect we’ll see more companies looking for outlandish ideas to search for the best fit for their business.

What do you think?  Do you agree with these tactics or do you think that all their IT data is going straight to their head?  Comment or email us at info@corporateresources.com.
