An analysis posted last month featured an annual compilation of the most in-demand jobs for the new year, based on supply and demand, growth, and salary data. The analysis used over 90 national and state employment resources and “looked at the average number of people hired per month in more than 700 occupations from January 2015 to September 2015 and compared that with the number of job postings for each occupation. The jobs were then ranked based on those with the biggest gap between the two figures.”
Although most of the results featured job opportunities in the healthcare and technology sectors, there are still other areas, including sales and marketing that according to the study, “require a college education with the largest gap between job openings and hires.”

About the Gap Between Postings and Hires
Marketing was listed third on the occupations list with a job growth of 23,692 since 2010. Sales Managers was listed as fourth with a job growth 35,399. The gaps of posting and hires is what’s most alarming. The “Marketing Manager’s” average monthly postings were over 91,630 while their actual hires were 8,447. That leaves a gap of 83,183. Sales Managers are equally challenged with the gap between posting and hires at 52,808.
The gaps in these sectors and others could be a number of reasons, to include multiple job postings for one position, an inaccurate job posting or even an opportunity for employers to collect resumes. Whatever the reason, there is still enough of a gap for employers to be concerned. Some experts say one issue could be the “hiring managers’ inflexibility” or “inability to think creatively when sourcing.”
The first question employers must ask is how this gap relates to their business? Evaluating the posting versus hiring statistics within your own company should be a top priority, particularly in this hot or in-demand positions.
Does the expert’s opinion hit too close to home? Perhaps it isn’t a hiring manager that’s the issue, but a department manager or possibly a skills gap with the candidates? Whatever it is, it’s clear that these industries and growing and the likelihood of hard-to-fill positions will continue to be an ongoing issue.
